Abalone shells are sacred containers to contain smoldering herbs and incense during smudging and ceremony. Protect the bottom of the shell with a minimum of 2 inches of sand or ash to protect the shell against high temperatures. The shells are ideal for burning sweetgrass, copal resin, palo santo and sage.
Place sage or sweet grass in the bottom of the shell, on top of the sand, ignite, then blow out flame and the sage or grass will release a cloud of white, purifying smoke. Hold the shell under the smoking incense to collect embers.
